How to Make a Pixel Quilt

Creating a pixel quilt pattern is easier than you might think!

Step-by-Step Instructions​

Find image and get it ready.

Find a photo or create a digital image and use image editing get it 'just so'

Need to crop or edit the image? 
​If you don't have special software, try using the tools in Apple's Camera or Photos app. We found this royalty-free image to explain the steps.

1.  Open a photo from your Camera Roll or digital image in Color Hints Mosaic.
​Use CH Mosaic to transform the image into pixels by changing settings and moving sliders to set piece shape (square, rectangle, or triangle). Control the abstraction by adjusting the number of pieces and colors. When the design is just right, tap to Share to QuiltSandwich.

1. Open image in Color Hints Mosaic. CH Mosaic lets you choose a photo or image from your Camera Roll or... take a photo right inside the app.

3. Next, tap 'Mosaic' and use slider to adjust the number of colors. Tap 'Limit' in upper right (otherwise the 'Other Apps' button will not be listed in the Share menu.)

2. Tap 'Original'. Choose the piece shape (square, rectangle or triangle) and use the slider to adjust the number of pieces in the rows & columns.

4. Next, tap Share in the upper left. On the Share pop-up, scroll through the bottom row of the Share options to find button to 'Share With Other Apps'.

​2. Color Hints Mosaic opens a popup to share to QuiltSandwich.
In the popup [1] set the piece size to determine the overall quilt size and [2] set how many pieces should be part of each patchwork block.

Scroll through apps to find 'Import with QuiltSandwich' button [pink icon] and tap.

On Import specify both [1] setting the piece size (which can be adjusted to effect the overall quilt size) and [2] setting the number of pieces in the patchwork block.

After a tap to Import, QuiltSandwich instantly adds the Quilt with yardage and cutting diagrams for each color as well as yardage for backing, batting and binding. Open the Journal for the overall quilt pattern and a full set of individual block patterns.

1. Instantly the tiled image from Color Hints Mosaic is added as a quilt to QuiltSandwich.

2. The Pixel Quilt piece names are the pattern names. Note the pattern includes yardage for the Backing, Batting, and Binding.

3. Use the Fabric Compare tool in the Fabric Stash to help you find fabrics that match the colors from CH Mosaic.

4. Then, use the Switch Fabric tool to swap a fabric in for a Color Hints Mosaic color.

Summary of HOW TO MAKE A PIXEL QUILT 
  1. Upload a photo from your device photo library into Color Hints Mosaic. ​
  2. Choose squares, rectangles or triangles
  3. Set number of pieces
  4. Adjust number of colors shown in the palette, playing with settings until just right. 
  5. Tap Limit button then Share button in Color Hints Mosaic to send the design to QuiltSandwich.
  6. ​QuiltSandwich app will open and ask your help with the two settings it needs to create the pattern: ​
    Piece size
    ​
    Number of pieces per block (sets the block layout pattern)
  7. QuiltSandwich instantly adds the quilt and creates the pattern in the Journal. Now you can start choosing your fabrics! Fabrics and the Compare and Swap tools can help find and swap in fabrics for the colors in the palette using your stash or while shopping.
  8. The yardage and cutting diagrams will guide you as you cut the pieces. Then, follow the patterns in the Journal to assemble the blocks and join them into the final quilt assembly. Note the quilt pattern also included yardage and cutting diagrams for the batting, backing and binding.
