Welcome to QuiltSandwich

Tutorial

There are two ways to use QuiltSandwich — as individual tools or to organize projects.
Picture

Use individual tools in QuiltSandwich and always have a yardage calculator as well as your fabrics and notions handy.

Organize projects with QuiltSandwich
and you'll carry projects with you because all the information about pieces and fabrics will be on your phone. For example, it can assist you while shopping at your LQS (or in your stash!) as you select and collect fabrics or calculate yardage at a cutting table.
quiltsandwich yardage calculator
The Yardage Calculator takes the finished size and settings to figure cut size and then calculates yardage. The yardage calculator is setup for piece, border, binding backing, and batting calculations. A cutting diagram is created with each calculation so you can see exactly how to get the pieces from that yardarge.
quiltsandwich fabric stash
Fabric Stash helps with both fabric selection and tracking. Fabrics are added as images from the camera. This means you can carry your stash with you when shopping at your LQS. You can also 'collect' favorite fabrics on your phone as you encounter them. Fabrics can be compared side-by-side.
quiltsandwich notions
Notion & Tools includes the unique Triangle Calculators that use finished size to figure cut size. It keeps at-the-ready basic references like standard sizes, conversion tables, and a resizing percentage calculator.

Quilt Projects organizes pieces with their yardage and fabrics into a project plan that help you stay organized as you gather materials and work at the cutting table.

New Quilt > Copy Quilt

A project and all it's pieces can be copied with their fabrics or the fabrics left empty. It really just depends if the fabrics from the original quilt will be helpful (or used again!) or if this project will be a fresh take on the design and easier to start up without the previous fabrics.

a  Create a layout in QuiltSize app and Share it to QuiltSandwich

Why QuiltSize?

If you need to plan a quilt to a size, QuiltSize can help.

QuiltSize app is used to help find the combination of block size, sashing and borders that will create a quilt top at a desired size. It displays the quilt top as an outline. QuiltSize combines all this information to show how closely they will come to fitting the desired finished size for the quilt top. Tweaking these items adjusts the layout and number of blocks so you can see when you have the combination needed for a quilt that is the size desired.

When Shared to QuiltSandwich the blocks are transferred as placeholders. They can be replaced with the block pieces get yardage needed to construct the blocks
Share a quilt layout from QuiltSize to QuiltSandwich
Just tap YES to add a QuiltSize layout to QuiltSandwich

Adjust the size of the Quilt Sandwich quilt top by setting the square size
When a Color Hints Mosaic design is Shared to QuiltSandwich, a quilt project is instantly added to QuiltSandwich. The project includes all the pieces with color tiles to aid switching out with fabrics, plus requirements for binding, batting, backing. The Journal has the complete pattern to assemble the quilt top.
It also includes a Journal to save pictures and notes, Color Mix shows the percentage mix of fabrics in color and gray scale, and fabrics listed with the pieces that use it.

PLUS two more tools —

Journal is a place to save quilt images & project notes as you work

Toolbox 2 — Yardage Calculator

quiltsandwich yardage calculator
Review a Cutting diagram for this yardage or FatQs! — The diagram clearly shows exactly how to orient and fold the fabric to get the exact number of pieces needed.
QUICK CALC only needs three bits of information —
  1. Piece shape & finished size
  2. Fabric width (or FatQ!)
  3. Number of pieces
-- then Yardage or FatQs needed is shown instantly!
Tap SCISSORS button to view the cutting diagram
CALCULATOR for creative freedom.

Adjust the default settings for unique requirements. For example —
  • Adjust seam allowance from 1/4"
  • Tap to adjust for one-way fabric
  • Tweak squaring up & shrinkage allowances
Tap SCISSORS to view the cutting diagram

Calculator for Quilt math with Yardage shown in cutting diagrams

  • Take sizes right off the design because finished sizes are expected by the calculator and it adds the seam allowance for you as it figures yardage
  • Avoid over spending on fabric by using the Yardage Calculator at your LQS cutting table or when shopping online
  • Consider your construction methods as you review the strips, pieces, and cut size in the cutting diagram
  • Adjust piece size to check yardage needed to cut oversized pieces
NOTES ABOUT THE CALCULATIONS:
  • Yardage Calculations are rounded up to the nearest 1/8 yard.
  • The yardage for each piece is calculated independently. So, if the cutting diagrams show 'good size scraps', review them carefully to look for opportunities to adjust allowances and buy less fabric overall.
  • When Least Fabric is selected, calculations are run twice in the background, first orienting pieces in one direction and then the other. The layout that uses the least fabric is shown.

  • When a piece is assigned a different fabric, fabric amount available is updated for BOTH the original fabric (it is added back to the stash) and for the new fabric choice (it is subtracted from the stash.)
  • If you are working with cut sizes enter the piece cut size AND set the seam allowance to zero. This is explained further in the blog entry, "What if you only have cut sizes to work with?"

Like it? Save a calculation — tap Save to add that piece to your quilt project!
NOTES ABOUT THE CALCULATIONS:
  • Yardage Calculations are rounded up to the nearest 1/8 yard.
  • The yardage for each piece is calculated independently. So, if the cutting diagrams show 'good size scraps', review them carefully to look for opportunities to buy less fabric overall.
  • When Least Fabric is selected, calculations are run twice in the background, first orienting pieces in one direction and then the other. The layout that uses the least fabric is shown.
  • Because piece finished sizes are expected by the Yardage Calculator take piece sizes right off your design — the QuiltSandwich app adds the seam allowance for you as it figures yardage.
  • If you are working with cut sizes enter the piece cut size AND set the seam allowance to zero. This is explained further in the blog entry, "What if you only have cut sizes to work with?"
  • When fabric price per yard is entered, QuiltSandwich will calculate the cost for the total amount of fabric yardage used. When the same fabric used for multiple pieces, the cost for the total purchased yardage or FatQuarters is shown in Fabric Stash.

Toolbox 3 — Fabrics

quiltsandwich fabric stash

Fabric in your stash or separated by project

Adds fabric with a camera snap — and you've always got your swatches handy!
  • Adjust allowances in the Fabric Stash to squeeze more pieces out of a piece of fabric.
NOTES ABOUT ADDING PIECES:
  • Add a fabric with either a snap of the camera or take a screenshot of an internet fabric.
  • If you are working with cut sizes, instead of finished piece sizes, go ahead and enter the piece cut size AND set the seam allowance to zero. This is explained further in the blog entry, "What if you only have cut sizes to work with?"
  • When fabric price per yard is entered, QuiltSandwich will calculate the cost for the total amount of fabric yardage used. When the same fabric used for multiple pieces, the cost for the total purchased yardage or FatQ is shown in Fabric Stash.
